Visited December 2023

Natural Mineral Spas are alluring for many reasons, from their therapeutic benefits to their cultural and historical significance and social and recreational experience. I enjoy simple relaxation. Living within sixty miles of Moccasin Springs in Hot Springs, SD, I had to take the opportunity to try this day spa with my daughter.

Indigenous people originally inhabited the area and frequently bathed in the warm mineral waters of the red rock, moccasin-shaped pool. In 1881, it was established as the first bathhouse in Hot Springs, SD. Nine years later, a new owner built the Hot Springs Hotel and Minnekahta Bath House. It was deemed a hazard and closed in 1963 until the new owner purchased it and transformed it into a modern wellness spa, officially opening in 2019.

While Moccasin Springs Spa's historical and cultural significance remains, it has evolved to meet the demands of contemporary spa-goers while still harnessing the healing power of natural mineral-rich waters.

Tucked up in the hills, surrounded by pine trees, this day spa's ambiance may tranquilize you for the day. The Soaking pools range in temperature from 80 to 105 degrees on average. We visited in December and found comfort in the warmer-temperature pools.

In addition to the hot springs pools, where you can purchase a three-hour time frame soak pass, you can unwind with various massage options, facials, yoga, sauna, or salt room. All guests must be 18 or older.

I spent forty minutes in the Sunlighten Infrared Sauna and left relaxed, energized, and invigorated. The highlight of my daughter's day was her aroma therapy massage with Kimberlee.

Reservations are a must and well in advance. Lockers, showers, and changing rooms are available. Robes, towels, and slippers are available for rent. There is an on-site restaurant with limited hours.

Moccasin Springs Spa is an attractive destination for many seeking wellness and rejuvenation. It is also the perfect scene for a mother-daughter day.

Pro-tips -

Moccasin Springs is an extremely busy place. Book appointments in advance and take the time to confirm.

It has limited restaurant hours. Bring snacks and water if you plan to spend the day.
