Small Town Christmas Magic

Updated: Dec 1, 2023

Watching Hallmark movies gives me a warm, cozy feeling, escaping reality and immersing myself in a world where things always work out for the best. I felt like I was in a Hallmark movie the first time I watched the Christmas Parade in Hill City, which takes place each year on the day after Thanksgiving. Eight years later, I still enjoy embracing the peaceful, magical small-town parade.

The main street is adorned with festive decorations, creating a warm and welcoming ambiance. The resounding Christmas music awakens feelings of joy and nostalgia. The familiar tunes triggered memories of holiday traditions and times spent with family. Reminders of traditional values, simpler times, and childhood memories.

The floats in the parade were decked out in colorful Christmas decorations—banners, trees, lights, and, of course, a very jolly Santa and Mrs. Claus. The floats created by local community organizations and businesses remind me of the actors and directors putting their artistic talents to work and creating memorable experiences for the spectators.

People are lined up up up and down Main Street, trying to keep warm in the brisk night air. Adding holiday cheer, the Alpine Inn serves complimentary cider, cookies, and warm chestnuts for the parade-goers.

Like a Hallmark movie, you will be romanced by the small, cozy, and charming town of Hill City, with its family-friendly community and picturesque setting that is particularly inviting during the Christmas season.

In addition to the parade, the Thanksgiving holiday starts with several community events and celebrations to get the Christmas holiday started:

*One of the most popular local traditions is the start of the 1880 Holiday Express Train, running late November through December.

*Exploring Main Street you will find unique one-of-a-kind gifts in the locally owned shops and boutiques and support the local businesses during the holiday season.

*The holiday market offers additional shopping options at the school.

*Family Christmas movie at the Community Center following the parade festivities.

*End the evening by taking a drive on the Lane of Lights.

Hill City is surrounded by natural beauty, with the backdrop of hills and forests offering picturesque winter scenes to enhance the holiday spirit.

Hill City offers a more peaceful and relaxed environment for those seeking a break from the hustle and bustle of larger cities during the holidays. It could be an ideal setting for a quiet holiday getaway.

Pro Tip

*Before planning a visit, checking current weather conditions is recommended. A Christmas parade with the appropriate gear will be more enjoyable.

*If you want to eat at the Alpine Inn, there is usually a wait; if you have children, have snacks handy during the wait. And for dessert, order the bread pudding.

*Embrace the magic in a small-town Christmas
